Shenington Round 8 Oct 20th
(Supa 60’s round 4)
We once again took the Championship down to the wire Lionel Sifleet and Dan Bury would put on a spectacular performance in the final. Anything can happen on the last round as we’ve seen in years gone by and with valuable points to gain and points to drop it turned out to be a very exciting weekend. It was ‘Pick on Perkins Day’ as he was stung for £72 after forgetting his licence and then was one of the three that were chosen for the random breathalyser test!! Weather was on our side for once this season and with a very healthy grid and both England and Wales winning their matches all was good. I really thought heat ones report would consist of ‘Due to the Welsh match’…… but due to two red flag incidents our heat was delayed. Paul Fowler has suggested we have an in house championship the Welsh against the English, this would mean yours truly having to enter, not on your life with you lot out there, plus the weight restriction would have to be raised substantially.
Heat 1
A. Sifleet took the early lead followed by Woodward, T. Bury, Plain, Green and Fowler. The Chicane would be the part of the track that attracted the most action all day, Green over cooked it on lap 2 sending T. Bury into the gravel, both managed to carry on and lap 3 with Plain now leading (due the demise of A. Sifleet) Fowler attempted a dive down the inside to claim 1st slightly overcooking it to end up back in 3rd. D. Bury took this advantage and slipped passed to claim 2nd. By lap 6 L. Sifleet was up to 4th and then passed Fowler on the next lap to give chase to D. Bury to which he picked him off out of the Strafford hairpin on the very next lap. On the last lap Fowler spun at Stratford and was out.
1st Plain, 2nd L. Sifleet, 3rd D. Bury, 4th Woodward, 5th Whyte, 6th Masson
Heat 2
L. Sifleet led the pack away and by lap 3 he was being chased by Plain and Callaghan, Callaghan passed Plain on the following lap. By lap 5 Callaghan had made it to the front and held onto the lead for another 2 laps until L. Sifleet took the lead back on the exit of the Stratford hairpin. Behind the duelling pair sat Plain these three had pulled away from the rest of the field leaving a train of D. Bury, Whyte, Henry, Perkins, Fowler, Green, Woodward and Masson all dicing for position.
1st L. Sifleet, 2nd Callaghan, 3rd Plain, 4th D. Bury, 5th Fowler, 6th Whyte
Heat 3
Henry made the best start but quickly Callaghan took up the lead. Henry in his attempt not to let him get away hit the tyre wall in the Chicane with a massive thump sending tyres and water everywhere, thankfully he jumped out of the kart and was seen putting all the tyres back whilst the rest of the field charged round!!! Callaghan made it stick this time and continued to secure the win. D. Bury remained in 2nd for 5 laps until L. Sifleet who gradually picked off one by one was up to 3rd. By lap 7 Sifleet was up to 2nd but Callaghan had a very comfortable lead so he would have to settle for 2nd place.
1st Callaghan, 2nd L. Sifleet, 3rd D. Bury, 4th Fowler, 5th A. Sifleet, 6th Woodward
Final
I am darned sure L. Sifleet had said he would take the final steady as he just had to finish the race to clinch the Championship. Read on. As the lights changed Sifleet from his pole position shot into the lead very closely followed by D. Bury, Plain, Callaghan, Whyte, Woodward and the rest. The first 3 laps saw 3 different leaders D. Bury led from Plain and L. Sifleet then Plain led from D. Bury and L. Sifleet. Callaghan had experienced issues on the warm up lap and on the first lap the kart stalled along the Stratford Straight he reported that with furious wiggling of some wires he got it going and was eventually credited with a final excellent 3rd place. By lap 5 Plain had eked out a comfortable distance, after several attempts L. Sifleet finally passed D. Bury to claim 2nd around the Stratford hairpin. This lap also saw Whyte nearly disappear into the same tyre pile as Henry which put pay to his race. Fowler had made it to 4th place closely followed by Callaghan. Lap 9 and Plain was out D. Bury tried so hard to pass Sifleet you couldn’t have watched a safer pair race with inches separating them; a spectacular display put on by the duelling pair, you just couldn’t keep our eyes off them. As the flag fell Sifleet not only won the last race of the season but clinched that all important title of 2019 210 Short Circuit Challenge Champion.
