Rissington – Round 4

This turned out to be a truly lovely event. To celebrate the life of Roger Powell a true karting stalwart, Rob Perkins with large fridge in situ on the grass had come armed with pies and pasties to eat during the day with superb food and drink for a barbecue after Saturdays practice. (We did laugh when half way through Saturday afternoon a lady wandered up with her purse enquiring if we sold chocolate!!!)
We didn’t want for anything. Rob had also provided the trophies, T. Shirts and mugs for the occasion.

A very big surprise was in store for Rogers Grandson Aaron when Rob and Tim Woodward entered him for a practice and a race on Sunday using Tim’s equipment and donning number 21 which was his Grandfathers racing number. Chris Jarvis was very obliging and leant his racing number for the weekend (rumour has it Chris may revert to 23 as he had a good day!!)
The Camaraderie which we have become famous for was noted by several onlookers from other classes This was part of a post made in the Rissington Face Book Group ‘I thought that the 210 group was great – lots of racing, beer and a full on BBQ on Saturday night, everyone pitching in together and having fun – the real ‘Spirit of Karting’.’ (Thanks for spotting that and sharing Chris Callaghan)
Long may our positive Ethos continue.
Heat 1

There was a slight predicament with the lights which meant several didn’t get away as well as they could for the first heat. It was Sifleet that headed the pack to the chequered flag with Woodward remaining in 2nd although he had to fend off a charging Whyte from midrace distance onwards. Whyte had demoted Perkins on lap 4 at the end of the back straight and had several attempts at the same manoeuvre with Woodward to no avail.
1st L. Sifleet, 2nd Woodward, 3rd Whyte, 4th Perkins, 5th Green, 6th D. Bury
Heat 2

Green got the flyer from the line whilst Smith and Woodward were left standing to fight it out at the rear of the field. Woodward allegedly having a wasp in his helmet (any excuse)!! Lap 2 saw Callaghan take the lead at Parc Ferme; he went on to take charge of the race pulling out a comfortable lead. Whyte who had started from the rear of the grid had made up 12 places to claim second, he did well to keep a chasing Green, A. Sifleet &
L. Sifleet behind him. On the penultimate lap L. Sifleet took both his son A. Sifleet and Green at the end of the Back Straight to finish 3rd. A. Sifleet followed through on the last lap to claim 4th.
1st Callaghan, 2nd Whyte, 3rd L. Sifleet, 4th A. Sifleet, 5th Green, 6th Perkins
Heat 3

Callaghan (definitely no wasp in his helmet!!) stormed away from his front row position to lead. Whyte wasn’t having any of it and passed him on the next lap. By lap 5 Whyte and Callaghan had been caught by L. Sifleet. Sifleet made many attempts to pass Callaghan which allowed Whyte to slightly pull away. He eventually claimed 2nd spot on the last lap. Meanwhile Henry took to the grass in his favourite spot along the Start Straight and Aaron Powell enjoying his experience in a 210 and getting to grips with it took his benefactor Perkins as they crossed the line!!
1st Whyte, 2nd L. Sifleet, 3rd Callaghan, 4th D. Bury, 5th Green, 6th A. Sifleet
Congratulations to Dan Bury for his average speed of 0.000 and securing 4th (Is that what you call arm chair racing???)
The Final

As the lights changed, L. Sifleet made the most of his pole position and would completely dominate the final. On lap 5 now with a big gap between himself and second place man, Whyte, Sifleet was so lucky not to spin let alone roll as he clipped the rumble strip by Parc Ferme but managed by the skin of his teeth to catch it (fresh underwear time methinks) Whyte had a very sedate race in 2nd place with no attention paid to him. Whereas Callaghan lost his 3rd spot to D. Bury at the start but regained it the lap after to remain in 3rd although, D. Bury did try to pass but to no avail. Green and A. Sifleet who were fighting for 5th & 6th had a coming together at the end of the Back Straight with A. Sifleet burying himself deep in the undergrowth. This handed 5th place to Woodward. Henry made up 4 places to claim 6th and to stay ahead of Perkins in 7th. For the first 4 laps it was the battle of the 20’s 27 – Tom Stone, 21 – Aaron Powell, 23 – Chris Jarvis, 28 Tom Smith and 20 Neil Hancock, all 5 having a very good dice. As you can see from this beautifully coiffured graph above for the remaining 7 laps everyone remained in station.
1st L. Sifleet, 2nd Whyte, 3rd Callaghan, 4th D. Bury, 5th Woodward, 6th Henry, 7th Perkins, 8th Powell, 9th Hancock, 10th Jarvis (N) 11th Smith, 12th Stone
Pit Bits
Thank you
Thank you for all supporting the memorial meeting. It was good to see people there even if they weren’t racing I know the Powell family were very touched.
Georgie Callahan
Georgie in October will be completing the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the charity Mind. This is totally out of her comfort zone but she is determined to succeed. Georgie for many years has greatly supported the Challenge, her brother and her father when he was racing and deserves our support for this event. Either I or Georgie will be coming around with a sponsor form at the next two meeting. If you can help it would be very much appreciated.
Looking forward to our afternoon tea and a general catch up, hope we don’t end up with soggy scones!!!!
