Shenington Final Round 8 – October 21st

Final Rnd 4 Supa 60’s

Perfect weather greeted the final round of the 2018 210 Challenge which saw another good turnout. This year has certainly whizzed by and with new and old faces appearing in the pits, next year is certainly looking very positive. Many seeded numbers were still up for grabs with Lee Plain only having to sign on to clinch the title, In years gone by we’ve seen that anything can go wrong at the last round so nothing was a certainty.

Heat 1

Lionel Sifleet had joined the grid as a guest driver to warm up for next season but would not receive points and immediately showed the viewing public that he hadn’t forgotten all those years of experience racing a 210 and shot off into the lead with Perkins, T. Bury, S. Cox, D. Bury, Green and the rest in hot pursuit. By lap 3 D. Bury was up to 2nd closely followed by Perkins. Whyte who’d got to work hard to maintain his second position in the Championship was up to 4th, Fowler 5th and Green 6th. Lap 5 saw Sifleet put the power down a little too early and spun. It was all change, Whyte now led with Perkins back ahead of D. Bury; Plain had picked his way through the field and was closely followed by Green and W. Cox. By lap 7 Plain had passed both Perkins and D. Bury to claim 2nd D. Bury had once again reclaimed the place in front of Perkins. Last lap saw Green and W. Cox demote Perkins to 5th

1st Whyte, 2nd Plain, 3rd D. Bury, 4th Green, 5th W. Cox, 6th Perkins

Heat 2

Green led the pack into café (it had been noted that this weekend he was driving as if he’d stolen the kart!!) W. Cox who would truly show us what he was made of in the final attempted to hold onto 2nd but Whyte had a different idea and made it up to 2nd by lap 2. Green held onto the lead for a further 5 laps until he lost out to both Whyte and Plain. Whyte now led with both Plain and Green getting up close and personal. W. Cox now lying in 4th kept D. Bury and Fowler at bay. On the last lap Plain snatched the lead away from Whyte to take the win.

1st Plain, 2nd Whyte, 3rd Green, 4th W. Cox, 5th D. Bury, 6th Fowler

Heat 3

S, Cox got away first followed by D. Bury Perkins, Plain, Fowler and Sifleet. Perkins took over at the front on the next lap with Whyte joining in the fight for the top 6. Lap 3 and Plain had passed Perkins out of the chicane Whyte was now up to 3rd, D. Bury 4th, Sifleet 5th and Green 6th. For the next few laps Plain began to leave a comfortable gap between himself and a train of 6 drivers, Whyte, Perkins, D. Bury, Sifleet, Green and W. Cox they were practically glued together!!! These diced and by lap 7 Plain, Whyte and Sifleet had put distance between themselves leaving the four of Green, Perkins, and W. Cox and D. Bury to fight it out.

1st Plain, 2nd Whyte, 3rd Sifleet, 4th Green, 5th W. Cox 6th Perkins

Final

Plain, Whyte and Green hosted the front row and as the lights changed it was Green who led the pack for half a lap. Plain got past through the chicane to lead; Green was 2nd, Whyte 3rd, D. Bury 4th, Sifleet 5th and T. Bury 6th. W. Cox who was currently in 7th decided to take the long route out of the chicane. Bouncing over the rumble strip he re-joined (without collecting anyone in his path) to catch the fast disappearing pack. Disaster befell Green on lap 3 and he was out. Whyte took up 2nd spot D, Bury 3rd Perkins 4th, W. Cox 5th (powered by red mist after his off) and T. Bury 6th. Lap 9 and Plain and Whyte had split from the chasing pack. D. Bury passed Perkins along the runway with Perkins returning the favour on the following lap. S, Cox and Hancock were battling it out further down the field (it later transpired there was a £10 wager between them!) D. Bury and Perkins continued to dice, W. Cox seemed to come from nowhere and he picked them both off one at a time for the last 2 laps.

As the flag fell Plain came in victorious not only winning the race but achieving that special title of 2018 210 Challenge Champion. 2nd Whyte, 3rd W. Cox, 4th Perkins, 5th D. Bury, 6th Hancock, 7th T. Bury, 8th S. Cox and 9th Tom Stone (N).

Congratulations Lee Plain 2018 210 Challenge Champion
